I Know What You Did Last Summer - Blu-ray Trilogy

It’s a boxset that fans of the first couple of films in the series should enjoy, but given how poor the third film is, and how mixed the second is, you’re kind of paying full price for just the original film.

The first film is my favourite though, and a genuine one among the post ‘Scream’ glut of slasher thrillers starring (then) up and coming young TV actors which poured out in the late 1990’s. The premise is simple and clear, but, as scripted by Kevin Williamson, it manages to take its collection of small fishing town characters and add just enough characterisation and depth to each of them (even the smaller side characters) before they get killed off that you actually feel sympathy when their fates arrive. Director Jim Gillespie also stages some effective sequences and memorable moments throughout.

The second film is an altogether blunter affair, ramping up the brutality and frequency of the kills but stripping away the sympathy for most of the victims the first film possessed. The likeability of the main leads just gets it through and it does manage one or two moments itself, but the idea was already a little played out and it shows.

The third film is simply a cheap direct to video cash in, with really nothing to recommend it in my book. But it’s here nonetheless.

The presentation of the limited edition set is OK. There’s an outer cardboard slipcase with artwork, then each film in its own normal Blu-ray case. Within each films case is enclosed the booklet, the poster and the art cards. On the discs there are interviews, commentaries etc to go through which all in takes a few hours of you did them all at once.

The package isn’t bad, the main problem is the inclusion of the third film, which is so irredeemably bad that I’d rather the set was just of the first two. From that point of view it’s maybe a little overpriced, but anyone interested will need to make their own mind up on that.

There are already one or two good reviews of this boxset, but Amazon has done its usual trick of transposing all the reviews from previous editions, giving a confused idea of what we are getting here. So let's clarify. Firstly, the box: 88 Films really do a superb job with their packaging (see also the "Urban Legend" box set). The packaging looks great, and you get essays and lots of extras on the discs. Secondly, the films: "I Know..." is a classic of what was then the new wave of horror, and ranks alongside "Scream" and the aforementioned "Urban Legend". The story has depth and the characters are well-drawn. It's fast-paced and inventive. I like "I Still Know..." just as much. Sure, it's not as subtle, but it rattles along nicely and the storm setting adds to its atmosphere. "I'll Always Know..." would have worked much better as a straight-ahead sequel. Instead the writer and director try to do something different (yet somehow stale). What's with the repeated views of clouds flying by? Why use different filming methods for different scenes? On the plus side, the acting may be the best of all three films. Ironically, it was the director who went on to a more successful career.

I KNOW.....BLURAY TRILOGY from 88 FILMS

The three BLURAYS are good transfers, though whether they are better than a good DVD might be debatable. What yo do get are very good subtitles, and loads of extras. The film come on 3 seperate discs, well packaged. The first benefits from it's 2 feisty, lovely leading ladies - Jennifer Love Hewitt (JLH) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (SMG). Sadly the 2 leading gentlemen don't quite cut it - not for me anyway - too unlikeable. Plenty of suspense, a bit of gore, and a good if prolonged climax, leaving the door open for Number TWO ISTILL KNOW....Again with JLH (thank goodness), but she is landed with the most annoying friends imaginable, some survive, some don't. You get the picture. This has it's moments for sure. Also a load of improbabilities(EG MINOR SPOILER...JLH is nervous and goes to her apartment and locks and DEAD BOLTS the door. Hearing a noise!!! she wanders around the dark for a couple of minutes, and of course, there is someone right behind her!!! How that person got in is conveniently never explained). The settings is full of young people one minute and the next deserted for the last 45 minutes of mayhem. It's not a bad slasher. I just wish the characters were a bit more likeable. The final film I'LL ALWAYS KNOW...is considered by many to be the worst of the three. Actually I liked it a lot, again perhaps, because the 2 leading ladies were excellent - Brooke Nevin and Torry deVito. Sadly their counterparts were again lumpen and not worthy of the ladies. Mystery, twists and location filming make this not a bad film at all. Shame about the ending. For the current price of £25 I think this is a bargain for fans.

I Know What You Did Last Summer was one of the first horror movies I watched when I turned 18 in 1998 and I've loved it ever since. Upgraded to Blu-ray and got this set just for the first movie. The other 2 I've watched once in the past but won't re-watch them anytime soon.
