This book, written by an award winning investigative journalist, chronicles the drug trafficking that took place in Mexico along the U.S. southern border during the 1970s and 1980s. The focus is on one drug lord in particular, Pablo Acosta. It is a nitty-gritty, comprehensive look at the life and death of a Mexican king pin and the social and economic milieu out of which he arose.

Though Pablo Acosta started out in the drug trade with smuggling marijuana, he expanded to include heroin, and later worked with the Colombians in the cocaine trade. Pablo Acosta’s philosophy was simple. As long as people were wanting to buy drugs, he was willing to sell.

The book is engagingly written. Chock full of interesting information, the author lays out Mexican’s drug trafficking history and the political and social forces that allowed for one such as Pablo Acosta to rise up and flourish. The author paints a vibrant picture of the rise and fall of Pablo Acosta, who, though born in Mexico was, interestingly enough, also an American citizen, as his grandfather had been born in Ford Stockton, Texas, and his father had been born in Terlingua, Texas, though he was later murdered in Ford Stockton, Texas, victim of a blood feud.

The author actually interviewed Pablo Acosta in the rural border town of Ojinaga, a town that Pablo Acosta controlled in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. Ojinaga sits right on the U.S.-Mexican border opposite the rural town of Presidio, Texas, right across the Rio Grande. The two towns are linked by the Presidio-Ojinaga International Bridge. The symbiotic nature of the relationship between border towns on each side of the Rio Grande is definitely a colorful one and one for which the book paints an indelible picture.

I confess that I was riveted. I simply could not put the book down. Those with an interest in true crime or enjoyed the Netflix series: Narcos and Narcos: Mexico will certainly find this book fascinating and gripping.

4,0 de 5 estrellas An Well Written Story of an Interesting Man

Drug Lord is the story of Pablo Acosta, a small-time smuggler who works his way up to be one of the larger traffickers in Mexico. His rise parallels the rise of the larger Mexican cartels, and the story is a fascinating tale of growing an illegal business.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* Terrence Poppa writes in an easy-to-read style, and his narratives are mostly captivating. He is a good story-teller, and the book captured my interest at the beginning and held it throughout. While it never really reaches the "can't put it down milestone", I did end up reading it in a couple days.

* The character of Acosta is quite interesting. He is quite the character, and capable of using violence, cunning, and just brute force to grow his business. And while is trip up the ladder of "success" is quite remarkable, his later fall is just as dramatic and well told.

* Poppa captures a reasonable mix of the hard side of Acosta (drugs, violence), and the soft side (literally getting his hands dirty helping to finance and build schools). He ends up with a reasonably complete picture of a somewhat simple, but complicated man.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* Poppa is given to throwing around accusations without much proof. For example, he accuses the dominant parties in Mexican politics of unbridled corruption and controlling elections but allowing other party candidates to run simply to chew up the resources of their party and supporters. Interesting accusations, and perhaps even true...but not well supported in the text or references.

* Some parts of the book contain too much detail and don't advance the story. There are a number of minor characters who enter and exit the narrative in short order, and don't contribute to the overall narrative.

=== Summary ===

The book is a great look at a fascinating story, and I enjoyed reading it. While a bit overly detailed in some sections, for the most part the book keeps moving and held my interest throughout. I would recommend it to any "true crime" fans, especially those interested in drug smuggling or in the geographic area of the Texas Big Bend area and the bordering part of Mexico.

5,0 de 5 estrellas Depth where it was needed
Revisado en los Estados Unidos 🇺🇸 el 21 de noviembre de 2013

Depth where it was needed in the life and culture of this drug lord. He was a flame burning brightly in the drug smuggling business, then went out in a dramatic finale. I just moved back to the US, after living in Mexico for over 7 years. There was no evidence of this type of business where I lived, so I have been reading several books on the topic since I returned, to see why people are so freaked out about Mexico. I assure you that there are lots of places where life is peaceful and undramatic. I sure wouldn't live anywhere near the border. But deep in Mexico there is comfortable serenity. I feel sorry for Mexico, with so much potential, and the graft is eating them up. Morditas (the money you slip to a bureaucratic entity) from a little to the cop who pulls you over, to the gigantic ones paid by businesses like Walmart in order to override the zoning laws. When Walmart came to our little corner of the world, they built a huge store right where it would block the view of the lake, and they felled an orchard. They were supposed to replace trees 1:1 and of course there is not a tree in sight.

This is very well written and has a good balance between looking at the characters and examining the political links with organized crime, and some of the social background.

The drug lords are by turns cavalier and calculating and the way they are embedded in local community and history is interesting. As usual, they have a short life span and again, as usual, one is struck by the notion that there are no pockets on a shroud. However, since death stalks the Mexican badlands anyway, one might as well get filthy rich before it finds you - if you have the ruthlessness to do so.

An influential book that covers the system of corruption between narcos and representatives of the state pretty much as well as books that have come since.

The banality of viciousness . A fascinating insight into what the American appetite for drugs has done to the neighboring culture . The money is so ridiculously huge that it completely takes over the minds and judgment of whole communities . The PRI and everybody else sold themselves for a piece of it . It is still going on and getting worse . There are no lines left to cross . As the book makes clear , we created the beast , feed the beast and at the same time want to kill the beast we created .

If you want to understand what is currently going on with the drug cartels on the U.S. Mexican border, read this book.

Pablo Acosta is a fascinating character and the book is hard to put down. It describes his personal life, how he got into the business, how the business operated, and how he got out of the business... or was removed from the business, actually more like a hostile takeover.

Although it focuses on a drug kingpin in a small Mexican border town, the author does a great job of showing how the Mexican government, judicial police and military are all involved in the top to bottom distribution of weed, cocaine and heroin.

Excellent, well written book.

He rose to Kingpin as a Marijuana smuggler in exile, to cocaine smuggler, just to fall a victim of his own power and product. This guy was dangerous, caring and psycho at the same time! I bought this book a fews years ago, read it then lent it to a friend...well you know how that goes...I bought another copy from Amazon last year to re-read and store in my book collection.
This is a great book about a Drug Kingpin, the history of Scapegoats, as well as the History of Mexican Smuggling.

I' a big admirer of the Big Bend region having camped, hiked, and motorcyled through the area for a long time. I came across this book title while reading a history of the region. This book appeals to those who enjoy the Big Bend area and the history of the region, but it also more than that. It provides a great insight into the pervasive narco culture and corruption in Mexico. I highly recommend this book.

3,0 de 5 estrellas An interesting true crime read

Drug Lord is the tale of the rise of king pin Pablo Acosta in Mexico's cut throat drug trade. The author does well to give the reader a sense of the seedy and violent world of drug running with the right mix of action and information.

What I got from this book was a look into the machinations of running drugs over the US/Mexico border from the politics and corruption to the risks and money to be made from it. The author has taken time to paint a realistic picture of this world and has not tried to glorify the violence for the sake of a good yarn. Overall a good solid entertaining and informative read.
