I purchased the 3 Fiji Island mysteries by B.M. Allsopp before a recent trip to Fiji. I read the introductory e-book and "Death on Paradise Island" before our trip, and I read "Death by tradition" after we returned. My wife and I spent a very pleasant 2 week vacation on Bequ Island, Fiji. We were able to to spend some time in a local village, visit a local school, visit a health care clinic as well as enjoy the beautiful island atmosphere. These books really capture the ambiance of Fiji. The characters in the novels are well developed and likable. The story lines are interesting and kept me turning the pages. The description of the fictional resort on Paradise Island was similar to what we experienced at the Bequ Island resort. Great hospitality and very interesting and engaging local people. What I liked best about the books is that they give a great feeling of the Fiji experience, at least what we saw in 2 weeks. In summary, very entertaining mysteries that portray Fiji in a realistic and very pleasant way. I recommend these mysteries, particularly if you want to feel like you are back in the warm environment of the Fiji Islands.
I loved the history and culture as well police procedures in a part of the world I know nothing about. It was fascinating and well written with a good story and great, likable characters. I can’t wait for the next one
Having read and enjoyed the first two books on murder mysteries which take place on Fiji islands, now I'm waiting for the third to see how life continues for Horseman. Will he ever play rugby again as he so desires or have to settle for coach? Will his American girlfriend find Figi too confining for her career? Nothing to do but wait patiently with fingers crossed.
I really like these Fiji detective books- and can’t wait till number 3 to arrive! They have nice normal people, beautiful descriptions of the island scenery and the traditions there. Quite relaxing , even though there are murders. Horseman is likeable and the other protagonists are believable. Hope there will be more books!
The description of Fijian culture is key to the mystery in this, the second book in the series. The story is very well written, keeping me up all night, until I finished it. I plan to enjoy the other books in this series soon. Add this to your TBR list; you'll want to treat yourself to a trip to Fiji.
I’ve never read a book set in Fiji before. What I found fascinating was the cultural situation in which the murder mystery took place. The characters were interesting and I found the plot developed logically. The only issue I had with the book is looking up a lot of Fijian words. I don’t know if there was a glossary of Fijian words in the print edition but there was none in the ebook. It would have been helpful.
At first I wondered if I had already read this book, but I quickly realized it was different. Joe Horseman and Singh deal with a difficult case set in the remote highlands of Fiji. The investigation ranges across many sources, and the results are not obvious. The style of writing is clear and direct, making for easy reading. Once I started the book was impossible to put down.
