5,0 de 5 estrellas Excellent sound if set up properly

Well, I'm an audiophile with a $30,000 dedicated stereo system in a dedicated room and have written many in-depth reviews of high-end audio equipment for a premier review site. I find the negative reviews of this speaker unfortunate as this speaker is capable of very satisfying and high quality sound, but like most higher quality audio products it requires a little more effort to get the best out of it. Specifically, for starters you want to play some music through it for at least 50 hours before making any assessments of its sound. This is because right out of the box the drivers will be stiff and need to loosen up before they will sound as designed, and the internal electronics inside the speaker also need to burn in.

Next, especially if the speaker will often be situated below ear height (but even if not) I'd highly recommend purchasing the associated ADS1 speaker "stands" as they aim the tweeters more toward your ears, which is critical as the high frequency sound from tweeters is highly directional and could be significantly compromised/decreased if your ears are well above or below the tweeters' axis. Secondly and also importantly, the rubber stands do a good job of damping vibrations between the speaker and whatever surface it's on, which improves bass tightness and evenness as well as overall imaging. These details may explain many of the reviews that found the B2 to be bass heavy or mushy sounding. Oh, and while we're on this topic, if sound quality is important and you want to hear the B2 at its best, REMOVE THE GRILL WHEN LISTENING. It blocks the sound -- especially the treble -- when it's on. The grill is more for protecting the drivers from prying fingers when not in use.

THIS NEXT PIECE IS CRITICAL. The B2 is a pretty revealing of whatever quality is fed into it precisely because it uses higher quality components than most other products in this class. Many other competitors boost bass and lower mids and attenuate upper treble so basically all music will sound the same through it. They'll never sound accurate or great, but they'll pretty much always sound appealing no matter what's fed into them. If that's what you're after, the B2 may not be for you. But there's something most people ignore that can make the B2 sound significantly better than almost all of the others. In your phone or whatever you're using for a sound source you can go into the audio settings and choose from several preset equalization options usually labelled "Jazz," "Rock," etc. These settings vary the sound you'll hear greatly, so it's critical you at least go through them with some of your music to find the one or two that sound best to you. The B2 will reward you substantially for your effort with likely significantly improved sound. Even better, if your phone, tablet, or whatever has an option called "Equalizer" or the like you may have the ability to customize the sound you hear to your specific preferences (rather than being limited to the above preset options) by giving you the ability to adjust individual frequencies from the low bass up through the midrange and up to the high treble. Don't worry, this is easy and if you take some time to play with it and you'll likely find a personal setting you prefer to any of the preset options. That's what I did and the B2 rewarded with very well balanced and pleasing sound that greatly surpassed most other wireless speakers I've heard. If it at all helps get you started with this, a good curve to start with would look something like a small letters "nr" next to each other with the lowest bass frequency starting at the midline and rising a little before decreasing to the midline in the midrange and then increasing back up again and leveling off at the highest treble a good bit above the midline. You'll see what I mean once you're in the equalizer. Again, if you put some effort in at the beginning the B2 has the resolution and refinement to produce very nice sound. Basically, garbage in garbage out. The B2 will let you hear it either way. Don't be afraid to play around with it to ultimately find what sounds best to you.

Lastly, there were some comments about the B2 sounding narrow unless you're sitting in front of it. I had the B2 out in a field while we played a waffle ball game and the sound does get compromised if you move off axis as it does with many high-end speakers. To mitigate this I turned the B2 up on its narrow end, and the sound literally filled the whole field with more than adequate volume and even decent bass. If you have the B2 in a larger space or in a party type situation you might want to try this if placement allows. By the way, I left the B2's volume controller on the rear at the mid level permanently and adjusted volume from my phone, and the speaker was always plenty loud enough so that's what I recommend doing.

Sorry for the length of this post, but especially if you're willing to follow the steps above (or even if you're not) the B2 is a very well made and great sounding speaker that will reward you more than most competitors out there.

Really good sound considering the small woofers; don’t expect a lot of bass from them but the midrange is good. I’m a fan of silk and other soft dome tweeters; metal ones sound harsh to my ears. I like that it will recognize four devices once paired, no need to pair those four again. I seem to recall seeing photos showing a Bluetooth antenna on the rear that projects above the cabinet, but there is no antenna on my recent purchase. I bought two silicone wedges to raise the drivers above the carpet - I have it placed under an end table, with the face even with the front of the end table.

Over the past few months, I've been slowly getting rid my large collection of dust magnet jewel cases and their CDs from our master bedroom bedside table and the CD towers in the living room and home office, slowly rebuilding my mostly classical music collection to ITunes MP4s purchased for my Windows 7 desktop and my IPad Air. It's time to get rid of the large and bulky 7 year-old Tivoli Hi-Fi system in the bedroom with its unreliable CD player and the repeatedly troublesome Classe Audio CD transport that's long been a part of my main stereo system. Time to replace the Tivoli with a nice bluetooth speaker and connect the stereo system to my desktop system.

After considerable research, I started with the Bose Soundlink Mini Bluetooth Speaker for about $200. Very small, portable, and sounds quite good for its size, with decent bass and OK mids and highs. For my home office desktop, I upgraded from some plastic legacy Altec speakers to the Audioengine A2+ Premium speakers with rubber mounts. Extremely natural and dynamic sound, excellent bass down to about 75Hz and smooth, natural mids and highs. After listening to the A2+ speakers for about three weeks, I was sold. That's when I found the Audioengine B2 bluetooth speaker here at Amazon for $299. It's really two of those superb A2+s fused together into a very attractive minimalist wood veneered bluetooth patckage. The B2 now sits on our master bedroom table along with the iPad Air, where it plays my iTunes playlists and fills the room with great sound. IMO, the B2 is by far the best bluetooth speaker out there at this time (until Audioengine decides to create and sell a larger A5+-based version). The small and portable Bose Mini? We take that out into the yard during patio lunches and gardening sessions, or when we go on vacation and want a decent bluetooth speaker for the hotel room.

12/21/2014 Update: My wife and I were so impressed with my first AudioEngine B2, we went ahead and ordered a second for the den. Since I first took ownership of the first B2, a few issues have come to my attention. First, I strongly recommend that you purchase and mount two black rubber Audioengine ADS1 Desktop Speaker Stands (also available from Amazon.com) side by side directly underneath the center of the B2 unit, just below the woofers and woofer ports. This will make an immediate improvement in the B2's sound quality, significantly improving the bass response (to what appears sub-60 Hz performance) and tilting the B2 speakers slightly upward, better directing the sound in your listening direction. Second, give the speakers about a week of extensive listening to allow them to "break in" properly. Third, if you use an iOS device (Ipad, Iphone, etc.) to connect to the B2 bluetooth speakers, be aware that at the present time they'll both appear under the same name in your Bluetooth settings and you might experience a bit of a hassle connecting to the correct B2 at any given time. The folks at AudioEngine are aware of this shortcoming (Android devices already allow you to custom rename your bluetooth devices). The AudioEngine reps assure me they've contacted Apple support and asked that an upcoming iOS 8.x update correct this problem. Finally, the clear, natural, and very smooth sound of the B2 bluetooth speakers continues to amaze me (as one would expect from conjoined A2+ speakers).

5,0 de 5 estrellas Not an Audiophile? It doesn't matter, you will love these speakers
Revisado en el Reino Unido 🇬🇧 el 17 de agosto de 2014

Before I begin this review I think it's first important to mention that I am not an audiophile nor am I a musician. I am a technology enthusiast who really enjoys listening to music.

When I began to consider buying a sound system for my computer I already had the idea of selecting a premium option. I had previously made a lavish headphone purchase and am now convinced that good sound equipment is worth the investment. I still get excited every time I use the headphones (Sony’s MDR-1RBT) and I wanted the same from speakers.

My internet research quickly brought me to the Audioengine 5+ speakers/monitors. These are definitely the computer speakers of the moment due in part to: their affiliation with Apple, their popularity amongst amateur DJ’s, their fantastic reviews and the undeniable fact that they ‘look cool’. Even so, I was still hesitant due to price and the lack of a subwoofer. When I saw a reduced offering through Amazon Warehouse (£238 vs the standard £330 for the Bamboo variant) I decided to take the plunge as this wasn’t significantly more expensive than the other options I was considering.

The speakers arrived quickly and I am convinced that they were returned to Amazon without being used. The first things to appreciate are that these are heavy speakers – the box weighs just below 15kg (the left speaker weighs 7kg, the right 4kg) and this may be a consideration if you intend to sit them on a weaker shelf. Unwrapping the speakers is straightforward and I appreciated that both the speakers and the accessories come in a cloth bag. This little touch adds to the premium nature and quality of the product.

Installing the speakers was a quick and simple task. I run mine through an Asus Xonar 7 external soundcard connected to a Macbook Pro. You don’t need a dedicated soundcard / DAC, but I decided to have one as I like to have full control. I’ve been using the speakers for 3 days across a variety of music genres (Dance, Metal, Punk, Folk, Chill-out) and I can only describe the sound/experience as fantastic. The music these speakers produce is incredibly clear and exhibits a depth of sound that I seldom encounter (only on friends home stereo setups). The sound is immersive and captures my attention in a way that weaker speakers are incapable of. Using such a good pair of speakers also highlights the importance of digital music quality; the atypical 128khz mp3 files sound fuzzy and much less impressive than their 192khz counterparts.

My previous concerns about the lack of a subwoofer were swiftly dealt with, as these speakers are capable of producing deep bass without cracking.

I am very happy with these speakers and I would recommend them to anyone in a similar position to myself. They are probably overkill for a casual user whose main use is Youtube, but then they are not really targeted at that market.

My final comment is regarding the position of the speakers. One of the suggested accessories are the Audioengine ADS1 foam bases. These bases are supposed to improve the sound quality by reducing vibration with hard surfaces (e.g. a desk) and pointing the speakers directly at your ears. I cannot comment on the vibration reduction but I have experienced that when I lower my head so that the speakers point directly at me, the sound is much better. I will definitely purchase a solution to this, although I might not buy the Audioengine offering, as £33 is very expensive for 2 pieces of foam.

5,0 de 5 estrellas Compact and convenient, good sound, ugly grill, some people might wish it had two more knobs.

I'm a sound quality fanatic, and sound quality can always be improved, but the B2 sounds pretty good. As is true of so many speakers, it sounds slightly better if you remove the grill. I prefer to use it through the auxiliary input, which is always the best way to connect audio devices for the best sound. Sounds ok through Bluetooth. Bass and treble knobs would have been nice, but on the other hand, they usually dirty up the sound a little bit. It has been perfectly reliable, so you will get your money's worth out of it. Some might say it's expensive, but cheap speakers aren't going to sound very good. This is for people who are willing to pay up for something nice. It doesn't look as good as it could have because of the grey grill. The zebrawood is really cool looking, but the grey grill is kind of ugly, and it would have looked better black. I'm glad I bought the zebrawood when I did because now you can't get it anymore.

After buying (and being disappointed by) a portable BT speaker for my wife's use, I decided that we really could use something that could fill up more of the house when we were using it. We have an Airport express hooked up to our stereo, but it's unreliable and requires iTunes or an Apple device. I've had Audioengine A2+ speakers for my main computer already, so these were an easy choice.

For the price I really don't think you'll find something with more sound. Yes, you're limited by how much bass these can produce (and it may surprise you just how much these can) and stereo separation is limited, but that should be pretty obvious when choosing this kind of device. Though limited, the bass is plenty sufficient for the types of music we listen to most frequently (classical, world music, show tunes, rock). It fills up the first floor of our house without going anywhere near the upper levels of volume. I think the audio quality is exceptional (again, given the parameters of the device) and has increased the amount of music that's playing in our house all the time, which is one of my goals in having the device. I've even used it when I've needed to give a vocal performance and wasn't sure if there was going to be an audio device on site that could play an accompaniment track with sufficient quality and volume and it worked wonderfully!

Coming from the background of having and loving the A2+s I knew that I'd be satisfied by the sound of the B2. The other key consideration since it primarily sits in our dining room (when I'm not lugging it around with me!) is that it works as part of the furniture. The subdued styling, especially with the mesh grill on it really make it blend in with the environment. The only time it's noticeable as a device is when the antenna is sticking straight up, and even then it blends in. So much less an eyesore than most BT speakers or other devices. Upon very close inspection you can tell the finish is a laminate, but it still looks nice even when you're close enough to notice it. It's got a good weight and the mesh snaps on securely. The light on the rear isn't noticeable unless you've got your head behind the device to see it.

The BT pairs easily and rapidly with a variety of devices. I have noticed that if you just turn off your BT without unpairing it takes a while before it can be paired again, but that's only been an issue when we're taking turns playing songs from it. It's far more reliable and versatile than the Airport equipment we have. The range is sufficient such that you can go anywhere on the floor or even up the stairs as long as you don't go to the extreme opposite end of the house. It gets used nearly daily in our house, and that's more than I can say for just about any other piece of electronics.

5,0 de 5 estrellas Audioengine B2 dual speaker - good fidelity sound but shy on deep bass

Bought this compact 2-in-1 speaker system for my desktop PC. When it arrived, I thought I would first use it with my new Sony LED TV as a soundbar. I connected it to the Headphone Out jack (3.5mm stereo plug) of the TV and plugged the power cord into a 120VAC receptacle. This little speaker has a built-in analog amplifier and produces a very clean and dynamic sound as a TV soundbar. Being a small speaker, it of course has limited low bass output, but I can buy a matching subwoofer later on if I want thundering bass. So, ignoring the low bass issue, the upper bass, midrange and treble are very nice, with low distortion. This speaker system and it works well in my 23' x 21' living room.
