Just got it. I’ve waited for a month to get it. Haven’t read it yet. At the first sight, it’s a very beautiful book, the hardcover looks so decent.

Update:
I’ve read the second chapter. I have to admit that it’s a life changing book. Very useful description, easy to understand. I kept nodding when I read it. Those words and demonstrations on a single page made me thinking a lot! I have drawn for years, but I stuck for somehow, I want to improve myself , reading this I know where my problems were . If you want to improve your artwork level like a master work , buy it now.
If you’re totally a beginner, I doubt it if it fits you. To me, after practice a lot, I get what the author is saying.

I’ve bought and read kinds of art books , you can learn from any art book, the question is how much effort you need to pay before getting a little process? Or, can you even read the whole book? As some books are really hard to read and understand. By now, Juliette is the best teacher. Every single page is full of useful information. I am not an English speaker, but I can fully understand what’s been taught in the book.

I'm really enjoying this book. I ordered the Kindle version which also includes the videos. Very interesting and applicable. Not sure which I enjoy more, the text or the videos.

5,0 de 5 estrellas A great book that makes a valuable addition to any artist's book collection

This is a very well presented hardback that covers the classical approach to drawing. It is nicely illustrated throughout, with work by a selection of well known or contemporary artists, showing discussed techniques in practice. The book itself was a little smaller in dimensions than I had expected (I should look at the listed specifications first, I suppose), however the content is excellent and logically structured. An added bonus is the included DVD that expands on topics in the book.

It should be noted that this is not a step-by-step tutorial book on how to draw specific subjects. The six lessons would assume that you have read the previous chapters and want to practice the principles outlined. It suits anyone looking to master a drawing approach that favours accuracy and representing the dynamic elements of their chosen subject.

The author, Juliette Aristides, has written a number of books on classical drawing and painting and her knowledge and comfort with the subject comes across here. She clearly understands the value of mastering drawing as a foundation to mastering painting and makes a compelling case for it in this publication.

There is a little bit of reading and thinking to do with this book, so it pays to spend some time going through it and to refer back to it occasionally. It's probably not for everyone; I would advise anyone looking for a book on specific techniques, laid out in visual step-by-step demonstrations, to look elsewhere. It's certainly not the only book on drawing you'll need as an artist due to its general nature.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand drawing from a tried and proven approach practiced by great artists through the centuries. I think this book would be a great addition to any serious artist's collection.

5,0 de 5 estrellas Highly convincing account of a specialist field

I'm very impressed with this book. I have Juliette Aristides' earlier book, which is interesting, but here she has gone from strength to stength. The text is clear and takes the reader through the ideas behind the 'atelier' movement, the notion that there is validity in a 'return' to nineteenth century ideas of academy drawing. The book is also a 'how to' and it does step by step analysis very well. There are plenty of examples of both unfinished and highly finished drawings that illustrate the points made. The structure of the book involves breaking drawing down into elements in order to learn aspects that then come together, so copying from the masters (an atelier basic) has a chapter, with later chapters on measuring, line and form. In this sense there is some of the 'orthodox' material one would expect here, but it is all strongly slanted towards accuracy, precision and encouraging the development of a thorough knowledge of what is being looked at. Aristides is convincing because her passion for the type of drawing she advocates is evident and, especially in the accompanying video, the care and craftsmanship she shows are highly impressive - and the same goes for the other artists in the video. In fact, good though the book is it is the free DVD that really raises this to an exceptional piece of work. Aristides herself is excellent, giving beautifully judged demonstrations that are also very well filmed. Her description of the procedure of starting from large, block shapes and refining to detail is impeccably delineated, and of course this, or some variant of it, is absolutely the way to go about making a representationl image, and arguably the best way to go about making any image. In this sense this book/DVD goes beyond the specialist field of academic drawing and I see no reason why it may not become an important addition to the canon of significant 'how to' books from Ruskin to Nicolaides. I can't give it higher praise than that!

5,0 de 5 estrellas Excellent primer on the life-drawing atelier approach

This book follows on from her earlier offering, "Classical Drawing Atelier", which looked at traditional art studio practice. This one follows on, looking in much greater detail at the skills of drawing from life in a studio setting. It begins with first principles - looking at your subject, and then setting out the structure of the drawing. It concludes that chapter by providing the first lesson, which is to make a master copy sketch. It continues, chapter by chapter, and lesson by lesson, to explore proportion, line, depth, colour palette, and finally form and character. The subjects taught, and the lessons provided, are all in classical traditional form, just as you might expect to learn in a real atelier setting.

Although the atelier approach aims to start with the basics, this book is not really something that I would recommend to an absolute beginner. If you already have some experience, particularly with life drawing and figure drawing, then this book will certainly advance your skills. However, it is no substitute for learning in a real atelier studio, though I don't know of anything that is.

The accompanying DVD offers an hour or so of Juliette demonstrating some of the techniques described in the book. The picture quality is a bit rough here and there, but the sections in which Juliette is actually drawing are very useful indeed.

The book is beautifully presented, and is packed with useful information, plus plenty of wonderful illustrations and examples. In taking the classical realist approach to drawing, it mirrors what the great masters learned, and equips you with the knowledge to produce much better drawings. Like I said, it's not for the beginner, but it is very useful for people wanting to improve their drawing, or as a primer for attending a real atelier course.

This book will take you from some very basic elements of drawing through to work of a very high standard - and even for those without much more than a basic drawing ability it will enable you to produce work which you will never have thought possible. In particular the focus on tone, or 'value', as it seems they prefer to say is especially important, with an emphasis on the importance of light and shadow throughout the book. It is not complicated, easily understood, with exercises that will develop the reader's style to leave one amazed that such quality of work has been achieved in so short a time. The DVD that accompanies it will enable you to see some excellent techniques and a wide variety of work by a number of artists and, I found extremely helpful As one who has been drawing and painting for thirty years, largely self taught, but selling my work regularly, I found that I learnt a great deal. So, for aspiring artists of all standards, my advice is to buy this book, you will not be disappointed, you can only improve, and find even greater fulfilment from your drawing.

I've been stuck with my drawing for over a year. Just as I was beginning to be able to actually draw something. Then I just got "drawer's block". This book is helping me to pick up that pencil again. The information is especially helpful as I decided to learn to draw at a very late stage in my life and it gave me such enjoyment until I got stuck. Now I feel like I am in art school, learning what most people learned (or not) in university. I highly recommend this book for both people like me and for very advanced artists as I think everyone can learn from Ms. Aristides' book.
