The room in which the radiator thermostat is located never seemed to be getting as warm as the thermostat was reporting, so I used a high quality digital thermometer to record the temperature in the room independently. The thermostat seems to record the approximately correct ambient temperature of the room when the radiator is off, but as it's located right next to the heat source, it heats up and records a far higher temperature when the radiator is on. For example. the heating is currently on and I am recording a (correct) ambient temperature of 19C in the room with the thermometer, while the thermostat is recording a temperature of 27C, a huge discrepancy. I can manually apply an offset of -8C via the app so that the thermostat thinks it's the correct temperature at the current moment, but this means that when the radiator is off and the thermostat is recording approximately the correct temperature, it thinks that the room is 8C colder than it actually is, which messes with the trigger to switch on the thermostat (also, the degree by which the thermostat misrecords the temperature is not linear and increases the longer the heating is on and the more the thermostat heats up, so the amount of offset changes considerably depending on how much the thermostat has been heated by the radiator).
This would seem to be a fundamental design flaw with the thermostat. I contacted Tado customer services, who replied:
"Your Smart Radiator Thermostat might be located in an area where the heat from the radiator gets trapped. Therefore, it is unable to correctly measure the room temperature.
There are two settings you can change to counter this:
1. Set an offset value for the measuring device, or
2. Select a different device to measure the temperature of the room."
I've attached a picture to show the position of the thermostat - it would seem to be a standard placement for a radiator thermostat. The option of applying an offset doesn't really work because of the reasons outlined above, and the second option means buying an expensive (currently price £120) wall thermostat merely to get the radiator thermostat to function correctly.
I'm surprised this problem hasn't been pointed out in other reviews so posting here.
The only thing you might want to consider is that the servos turning the water supply on and off are fairly loud and might disturb you if used in a bedroom with a light sleeper.

Tado now charge a subscription of £3 per month. Anyone new to Tado will have to pay this for the Geo location function / Open windows detection / Weather adaptation functionality. Existing users will only have to pay the subscription charge if they decide to upgrade the app for the one off £20 fee (I think I’ll be sticking with the old app for the foreseeable future). Tado have stated they will continue to honour the old app. The potential for a subscription was not expected or explained at the time of purchase so I have removed 1 star.
It’s perfect for heating rooms at certain times of the day (i.e Having the bathroom nice and toasty in the morning, but a lower temp during the day). Some people have reported that their Tado setup cannot cope with any more than 10 Tado thermostats (Not a problem for me).
Each thermostat comes with a couple of adaptors to suit your radiator (Please note you may need to purchase an additional adapter if your radiators are ‘danfoss’).
Sticky radiator valves may be an issue (Consider the condition of your radiators before purchasing).
Rechargeable batteries are discouraged so anyone who is an eco purist may wish to think twice.
If your boiler has a wireless thermostat, you will also need to purchase the Tado Extension kit.
The radiator thermostats are easy to fit, but I would recommend the rest be fitted by a professional or a confident DIYer. You can hear the motor opening and closing, but it is relatively quiet.
IFTT (If This Then That) is supported, so you can adjust the heating according to many variables (IFTT is a third party app).
You can tell Alexa to adjust the temperature, but this will override any schedules you have created. The thermostats also monitor the humidity of your home, helping you avoid costly damages from dry rot or damp. This is not a cheap bit of kit but it does feel well made (The company has roots in Germany). If you aren’t sure if this system will save you money, you may find the Tado money back guarantee reassuring. I have found the Tado support team really helpful and quick to respond my questions. Others have reported different experiences (I can only assume this must be due to timing and peaks in demand)?
Taking into account all of these points I would recommend the Tado system, but remember there is now an ongoing subscription cost of £3 per month to be factored into your budget.

Also their system isn't able to tell whether the batteries are full/empty if you use rechargeable AA batteries like the Eneloop ones. So the low battery warning is useless, unless you keep buying disposable AA batteries to use, which costs ££ over time.
Budget to get through two battery changes per radiator head per year. So cost of 4 AA batteries (around £3?) per year for running cost.

The thermostats are easy to fit and were up and running in five minutes. Initially had a problem where the thermostat wasn't closing the radiator valve properly, meaning the radiators were on full all the time. I contacted Tado and they did some remote control magic which fixed it straight away.
I now have my bedroom set to heat only first thing in the morning and last thing at night (and also at later times at the weekend), saving heating the room all day when I'm not using it. The bathroom is to a slightly higher temperature so that it's toasty in the morning. Programming different times and temperatures for each room in the app (if you want to do that) is simple and intuitive.
If you have Tado, you need these. If you don't have Tado, get Tado and add these!
