This is an enjoyable, pacey story about a man who follows his dreams - to only to find that they don't take him where he expected; narrated by the main character's father, it decribes the effects of his actions on those around him, and how everyone is changed by his experiences. The action takes the protagonist from the safe affluence of London's prosperous suburbs, and exposes him to a rather different way of life in Melbourne's more gamey districts.
This is a short novel. The story is simply told, and is an easy read. The author has a good sense of place enabling the reader to picture the scenes described. It is Simon Bardwell's first novel, and is highly recommended.
A very engaging and fast moving story. The idea of a son asking to take I his inheritance before time is challenging. We are taken on a roller coaster ride through the depths of depravity and emerge after a meeting with people who reflect the love Christ. The consequences are intriguing.
Simon's first book is the story of an impetuous rather than prodigal son, and his very patient father. The young man, had he not had some forgiving family and friends around him, could have made a complete mess of his life by one major decision he made. The story flowed in an easy and comfortable way, although the tone changed radically when the son arrived in Australia and connected up with some extremely dark characters. The reader should not be put off by the poor punctuation - I found that this really didn't need to get in the way of the flow of the story.
