Having been through the experience of losing a close family member to cancer, I now would advise a different course of action on where to turn for the best care and now have much more information than those years ago when I desperately needed this guide. I think Butler has done a great service to people in those situations and think everyone would benefit from this short book to be prepared in case of such a diagnosis.
The book answers questions the newly diagnosed patients and caregivers will have such as: Why does cancer occur? How do I find the best people to be on my team against the disease? What questions should I ask my doctors? What is the caregiver's role and how can they be the best caregiver? What are clinical trials all about and should I be in one?
Importantly, the book is interspersed with Butler's own experience as a caregiver dealing with his little brother's almost lifetime experience with the disease. Butler takes the reader from beginning to end from Ashley Butler's diagnosis at a young age through his battle against the disease that ended a couple of years ago. The book is written in a down-to-earth and easy to comprehend style that is not overly technical or cumbersome. I highly recommend reading this inexpensive, yet powerful guide presented by someone who has gone through the experience.
Do you and your loved ones a favor and read The Patient and Caregiver's Guide to Cancer.
My wife and I could've really used such a guide a few years ago when she was diagnosed. Even surrounded by supporters and well-meaning professionals, you can feel so alone and unsure about how to proceed going along that path. A life's at stake! Our blessing was her victory over the disease. We recently went thru a scare, thinking it returned, but were blessed once more upon learning that all was well! While we awaited word, it seemed a Godsend to learn of this book at this time.
"The Patient and Caregiver's Guide To Cancer" is written well: easy to understand, offers plenty of wisdom. The book offers hope and empowers the reader. The author calls for a paradigm shift in this "industry" (cancer study, development of treatments, who's involved, and on) and I'm in complete agreement. Mr. Butler issues a challenge to doctors, which I found to be powerful and refreshing. It's one hopefully many are willing to take on. He even invites readers to email him with questions. Talk about a kind and humble servant!
All the best to anyone needing such a guide. I'm glad it's available to you. To you and Rhett Butler, God bless and Merry Christmas!
