4,0 de 5 estrellas Prolix But Decent Mystery

This is one of those books which some people will like and, perhaps, an equal number will dislike. Those coming expecting the clean, straightforward prose of the usual kindle mystery are going to find that the author rarely uses one word if three will suffice. To others, the verbosity will be intricate prose capturing better the sights, sounds and emotional experiences of her character than does the 'ordinary' mystery. It does seem to me to be accurate to say that there is more romance than mystery, but that is the case with many of the new kindle mysteries. Like it or not, that is the case and the reader should be forewarned. At a certain point, the author decides to descend (or ascend) to melodrama which either drives her into illogical (and difficult to understand) behavioral patterns or a good dollop of suspense, depending on your viewpoint.
Over-all, I tend to lean more to acceptance than rejection although I am troubled by the more melodramatic sections which lead to resolution of the problems. She does well describe the chilled character of her setting, often making me feel that I am somewhere in the neighborhood of the Hudson Bay region or Antarctica. This should be a good bet for those who live in similar climates or want to feel cool on the hot summer beaches. I do imagine that the author will tighten up her prose and occasional literary illogicality of character behavior in the future volumes of the series.

4,0 de 5 estrellas Baby, it's cold in Jackson Hole

I won't waste your time by detailing the plot which others have commented on in their reviews.
I'll just state that this is a good book. What's particularly well done is the setting. The reader gets a real feel for Jackson Hole and what it's like there in winter.

Why I didn't give it 5 stars: Stephen King once said something to the effect that the formula for his books is that he puts his protagonist up in a tree and throws rocks at him. At the start of the book, McClendon does indeed put her heroine, Alix Thorson, up a tree when her stepfather is arrested for a crime he does not commit. The problem is that McClendon does not throw any "rocks" at Alix for almost the next third of the book as she concentrates on Alix's character. It would have been better if she had combined the two devices. However, I should state that once she does up the tension, the rocks come flying one after another, and the plot builds nicely.

A good book and, better, it's free for now.

4,0 de 5 estrellas Amusing mystery
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 14 de noviembre de 2011

This is an enjoyable mystery, with amusing information about Norwegian-American traits--though to be fair, the noted characteristics are more human than specifically Nordic. The book is an enjoyable bit of fluff. However, there were instances when I was not sure if something had been left out, such as location 889 of 6306 where a paragraph and sentence begin "paolo's sister" The first word of a sentence, a character's name, should be capitalized. Also, there appeared to be a break in the story which should have been indicated by a blank space. I assume there was poor proofreading done, an all too often criticism of Kindle books. Conversely, at location 1070 of 6306, a break in the novel is indicated by a space--yet there is no change in the scene. I'm not willing to go through the entire book listing these errors.

3,0 de 5 estrellas Not as good as I'd hoped
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 27 de noviembre de 2011

Unfortunately, I was a little disappointed with this novel. The idea was good, but the story was too drawn out for me and I didn't feel the mystery pulled together well. There were too many unanswered questions about the stone and some of the characters motivations. While I really liked Alix in the previous novel, I found her recklessness to be frustrating here and her romantic life a bore. On a positive note, I really liked the part of the story surrounding the Nordic festival. McClendon described it in a way that sounded so interesting...like you'd really want to be there. I enjoyed Painted Truth (book #2 in the series) so much though, that I think I will give Blue Wolf a try. I hope it's full of the plot twists and intricate storyline that I've liked in this author's other works.

Indie review By Jeremy Poole
Nordic Nights (The Alix Thorssen Mysteries) by Lise McClendon
I really expected too much from this mystery thriller. I'd read reviews that gave it all four and five stars. They were wrong!
The writing is good and well crafted, but the sheer unbeleivability and lack of drive left me cold.
Alix, our heroin, is wonderful and hardworking with a sense of justice, so we're told too many times. She is dragged into a mystery where an artist is killed and her mother's boyfriend is blamed. Sounds like a good plot, and it could have worked, if only the inconsistencies were ironed out. For instance, Alix is shot at, three times, through here shop window, she puts cardboard over the bullet hole and carries on working. She never calls the police, or any help at all. The bullets went through a couple of works of art, which didn't belong to her and she told the Norwegian consulate, it was kids driving by having fun????
Then, she is kidnapped, escapes, runs through and American town being shot at. No one call the police, she goes into a hotel and then doesn't call the cops, but sneaks out the back. Sorry too unbelievable. And all for a stone. I don't buy it.
It was a struggle to finish this book, so I'm sorry Lise but I can't recommend Nordic nights to anyone. Two stars.

1,0 de 5 estrellas Not a detective story, and very much an amateur effort.
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 18 de noviembre de 2011

This was supposed to be a mystery, but reads more like a boring romance novel. The story is bland, and the pace of the plot development is very, very slow- perhaps because there isn't much of a plot to begin with. I only finished the book because I like to finish what I start, not because I enjoyed it. It is very amateurish, and the few action scenes are full of fundamental flaws. The whole kidnapping scene and then the escape were beyond ridiculous. The mother Una has a broken arm, a swollen ankle and can barely move... she and Alix make it safely into a hotel lobby, but instead of crying for help and calling the police, they run right out the back and try to run into the woods in the middle of a frigid winter's night. Really? C'mon man! It's downright silly!
The main character in the book is an art dealer, Alix Thorssen. Unfortunately, she is the least likeable of any of the characters in the book, save the antagonist. The author takes it for granted that you will care about her dating life, her personal feelings for the town in which she now resides and her total self-involvement, but I kept longing for the author to shut up about it and make something happen already! I can only recommend this book as a sleep aid, not as a good read.

4,0 de 5 estrellas interesting

Being of Norwegian heritage (in part) I found it interesting although it wasn't a book I couldn't put down. Even if the editing had been done I wouldn't rate it higher. Words hyphenated in the wrong places, capitalizations missing at the beginning of sentences, etc. It's a nice little read though. Descriptive enough to visualize while reading which is important to me. I got it free for Kindle at Amazon.com and personally I wouldn't not pay for it.

3,0 de 5 estrellas Not my type of book. Rambling.
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 12 de marzo de 2013

It was quite a long book which could have been condensed to make it more enjoyable. I was disappointed with it. It seemed to go on & on without saying much. As I said it rambled. I had to finish it to see what happened. But even the ending was predictable. I could not recommend this book as a book worth reading. The worse part was that I paid money for the book & not read it for free.

4,0 de 5 estrellas Good mystery
Revisado en los Estados Unidos el 9 de septiembre de 2012

I agree with all the positive reviews given---good mystery and good characters. I would have given a 5 had the punctuation been better, and some verb tenses more correct. The most obvious of the punctuation errors were numerous times that two sentences were run together, with no period to end the first and no capitalization of the first word (even when I) in the second. Help needed from editor!

I sat down this evening to read a few chapters of this book because I was in the mood for a mystery, and then couldn't quit! At the end of every chapter, I found myself saying, okay, just one more chapter, except I couldn't stop until I had finished the book! I dare you to read just a little! You won't be able to do it!
