Have been waiting for some time to view this movie, having read the unbelievably beautiful and inspiring book on which it is based. Don't understand the negative reviews to date,its as if someone is purposely trying to sabotage the successful release of this video release. First off the film successfully recreates the brutal life of the SA army.It also combines successfully the antiquated views of gay people at the time,and more especially if you were serving in the defense force,and the negative reactions people had. For me it was a going back as I served in that force and well remember the prejudice, hatred and brutality all practiced and accepted by many in authority. The movie touches on the hatred shown towards people of colour,it touches on how religion influences the learned hatred of gays and those with a different skin colour. Given its a cast of actors one has never heard of they turn in amazing performances, giving the film a sense of realism and poinancy that brings it very much to life. The director has recreated a beautiful film,it is not perfect,but he has a sense of respecting the source material and the end result is a very, very good movie. Also the DVD copy I purchased has subtitles so don't know if they corrected all copies since I purchased it. I live in Canada and bought from Amazon. UK,and played it on a region free player.

The film "Moffie "is not a true or accurate portrail of South African Army life in 1981

The Director Oliver Hermanus obviously did little research into SA Army life in 1981,as the film has so many inaccuracies, untruths and absurdist's, that most of what he thought happened in reality did not. ! Homosexuality was very uncommon, I saw none in my 3 years in the SA Army. Salt Peter.. "Blue Stone" was added to Coffee and Tea which stop sexual arousement of recruits, "troopies" during basic training. Recruits would never have abused a black man on a station, as over 70% were Calvinistic educated Afrikaners whose parents instilled discipline decencies and manners in their children, in fact I never saw any abuse of black men or women during my army years in Southern Africa. Depredation of water to recruits never happened in training, moral was always high through out the army and during initial basic training. Officers never swore and shouted at recruits. . Recruits had very short hair too. Bedford lorries were never called "trucks" and Land Rovers had two headlights not four ! FN R1 rifles were used not old 303's in combat, except by Commandoes.. This film does more damage to the reputation of the best Army in Africa and to all those brave men who were compelled to years of military training often against their will and the apartheid government in 1981.

Selected this movie as I lived and grew up in Pta , where I went to school and Jhb -uni during this time and boyfriends and friends brothers were sent to the border (our boys on the order) and as a coming out gay woman I knew many gay men @ Uni in Jhb. Sadism, sexism and homophobia authoritarianism etc all portrayed painfully as it was ..authentically too with correct accents etc for a change.....always appreciated. prepare for graphic cruelty. Great to hear all the old pop songs from that time tho!!

Pure idiocy by the distributor. They've subtitled only the Afrikaans dialogue, making the DVD unwatchable by the hard of hearing.

I read the book and was looking forward to watching the film. Very disappointing.
