Biografía del autor

JULIETTE ARISTIDES studied at the National Academy of Design, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and various private ateliers. She is currently the instructor of the Aristides Classical Atelier at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, Washington. In 2003, Juliette was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant. Her work can be seen at the John Pence Gallery in San Francisco and the Art Renewal Center Living Masters Gallery, www.ArtRenewal.com.

Parece ser un libro bastante popular dentro de su ámbito (fundamentalmente dibujo clásico). Sin embargo, aparte de una presentación muy cuidada, no he encontrado casi nada que no haya sido expuesto en otros manuales. Muchos de los temas los toca de forma superficial (especialmente la perspectiva), y con frecuencia los ejercicios prácticos se sienten parcialmente desconectados del contenido teórico de su correspondiente capítulo. Lo mismo pasa con el contenido del DVD, que no aporta casi nada. Eso sí, las obras reproducidas en sus páginas son muchas, y van desde lo mediocre hasta lo extraordinario.

Wow. This book is for you if you really want to learn how to draw. To learn to draw the way that the masters drew. There are no quick fixes but it's full of spot on advice and practical knowledge. I spent two years at art college and expected to be tutored in how to draw there, not a bit of it. My first life class was a rabbit in the headlights experience, and I've looked since for a tuition guide to teach me what I was never taught, this book is that tuition. Juliette Aristides shows the method that she learned in order to draw, and encourages us that we can learn it too. Like anything worth learning it takes some time, head scratching, and perseverance, but if you're lost in the dark like I was then this book is the light showing through the tunnel. I don't understand the review that says that the included dvd isn't helpful. In the film Juliette shows us how to apply the techniques she encourages us to use in the book, I feel that the dvd is an excellent companion to the book.

This is a very well presented hardback that covers the classical approach to drawing. It is nicely illustrated throughout, with work by a selection of well known or contemporary artists, showing discussed techniques in practice. The book itself was a little smaller in dimensions than I had expected (I should look at the listed specifications first, I suppose), however the content is excellent and logically structured. An added bonus is the included DVD that expands on topics in the book.

It should be noted that this is not a step-by-step tutorial book on how to draw specific subjects. The six lessons would assume that you have read the previous chapters and want to practice the principles outlined. It suits anyone looking to master a drawing approach that favours accuracy and representing the dynamic elements of their chosen subject.

The author, Juliette Aristides, has written a number of books on classical drawing and painting and her knowledge and comfort with the subject comes across here. She clearly understands the value of mastering drawing as a foundation to mastering painting and makes a compelling case for it in this publication.

There is a little bit of reading and thinking to do with this book, so it pays to spend some time going through it and to refer back to it occasionally. It's probably not for everyone; I would advise anyone looking for a book on specific techniques, laid out in visual step-by-step demonstrations, to look elsewhere. It's certainly not the only book on drawing you'll need as an artist due to its general nature.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to understand drawing from a tried and proven approach practiced by great artists through the centuries. I think this book would be a great addition to any serious artist's collection.

This book will take you from some very basic elements of drawing through to work of a very high standard - and even for those without much more than a basic drawing ability it will enable you to produce work which you will never have thought possible. In particular the focus on tone, or 'value', as it seems they prefer to say is especially important, with an emphasis on the importance of light and shadow throughout the book. It is not complicated, easily understood, with exercises that will develop the reader's style to leave one amazed that such quality of work has been achieved in so short a time. The DVD that accompanies it will enable you to see some excellent techniques and a wide variety of work by a number of artists and, I found extremely helpful As one who has been drawing and painting for thirty years, largely self taught, but selling my work regularly, I found that I learnt a great deal. So, for aspiring artists of all standards, my advice is to buy this book, you will not be disappointed, you can only improve, and find even greater fulfilment from your drawing.

This is an excellent buy. The accompanying DVD is a bonus, but the book is really worthwhile. There are many how to draw books but this is one of the best I've found. I feel sure it will become a classic. It offers quite sophisticated insights about perception, observation and techniques but in a very readable way. The 6 lessons appended to each chapter are useful exercises designed to move student's drawing skills forward. This is a book for the intermediate artist or those with some experience working alone, sadly an all too rare find within art publishing. Excellent value for money too. The Charles Bargue Drawing Course is due for re-release soon at a much more sensible price than that currently available, and it would make a good companion volume for the working processes suggested here.
