This is no "Latter Days" (same writer) but then such a comparison would be unfair. "Kiss the Bride" is really something much different, and whilst many would describe it as light-hearted comedy, I would say it was much more than that. The story is actually quite unique, and explores the love one man has for another outside the traditional understanding of homosexuality. The ending surprises, and whilst it is not the end one expects (or dare I say wants), it is both sincere and understandable.
For those that have fallen in love with their best friend, this movie will have a deeper resonance, and much of the angst contained within that reality will be reminiscent of your own turmoil. This is made even more complicated when your best friend loves you back, but cannot (for unexplained reasons of his own) accept the consequences of choosing that love. Indeed to choose such a love in the face of what family, society and friends demand, takes great courage and character. Not many have the strength to take a stand in this regard, whereas others have not only the strength but also the determination to make it work. This is the fundamental difference between the two characters of Matt and Ryan. Whilst both are deeply in love with each other, only one had the courage to do something about it.....or did he.
Filled with comic relief and beautiful people, makes the movie even more palatable than is needed. As a story it succeeds on its own, and the beauty is but an add on feature (much appreciated I might add) which gives the movie a necessary sexual electricity. The dynamic between Matt and Ryan is almost tangible, and yet at the same time so desperately sad.
I really liked this movie, and after having watched it was thrown back to the time when I, like Matt learnt the hard way that fantasy and expectation, are not always the truth.
