Kaleb Holt is a firefighter, his days (and often nights) are filled with rescuing motorists from crashed vehicles, pulling people from burning buildings and getting cats down from trees. Kaleb is a brave and upstanding man but he is also prideful, quick tempered and prone to fits of anger - it’s also loosely referenced that he has a possible pornography addiction. His marriage is fast disintegrating and the only contact he has with his estranged neighbours is when they see him destroying something in his driveway during one of his many angry outbursts, the latter scenes making for some genuinely very funny moments. With his wife having already lined up another man and his divorce seemingly imminent - things are not looking too great !
Is it any good ?
Most certainly; Fireproof addresses the difficulties and temptations that occur in all marriages and shows how faith in Jesus can heal even the most hopeless cases. The script is simple but cohesive and the dialogue, although it’s not going to win any awards, is peppy and generally avoids clichés. On the downside it would have been good to hear a few more scripture verses quoted, also the production values are good rather than brilliant but owing to Fireproof,s many charms - all of this is forgivable.
Fireproof is a kind hearted and enjoyable tale of marriage reconciliation against all odds, its vaguely reminiscent of the 1991 secular film ‘Backdraft’ but gratefully without the horror and the gore. The film highlights how pride and selfishness, on either side, are detrimental to a healthy marriage and how divorcee is very much like a disease, it begins with minor symptoms but gradually gets worse until the death of the marriage is inevitable or at least it would be without Jesus’ intervention!
There are few films which deal with the consequences of marriage breakdown in a positive way. Fireproof manages to show the reality of a couple who have grown apart and yet gives hope that relationships can be restored while not sugar-coating the experience.
I found myself utterly drawn in, hoping and rooting for the couple, devastated when things got progressively worse and yet inspired by the story. The ending was perfect. A great movie for upcoming Valentines Day!
I've seen the film a few times now and it still gets me.
The challenge mentioned in the film - the Love Dare is available as a book and is if anything, tougher than the experience the character went through. If you want to be a hero in your own marriage adventure - take the challenge!
