This modest little thriller is not at all well served by either of it's titles, especially the original one of "Catacombs" which has only the tiniest, incidental relation to the story. It's a familiar tale of a man who kills his shrewish wife to be with another woman, and then is haunted by the wife's apparent return from the dead.
The movie suffers greatly from the casting of Gary Merrill, who may be a stalwart Hollywood movie star, but he's way too old and craggy to be the love interest for the young and beautiful Jane Merrow, who was about 25 years younger than Merrill when this movie was made. He also performs some of the worst screen kissing I have ever seen - actually all the kissing in this film is laughably bad, completely distinguishing any sense of reality. Aside from Merrill's lack of charm, the story is also fairly sluggish. Seemingly borrowing heavily from "The Haunting" in a scene where the characters are menaced by pure sounds, and then later borrowing from "Les Diaboliques" in the finale. Luckily the acting from the two female leads is very good. On the other hand, the male actors are pretty poor.
Everything is nicely photographed but the film suffers from a low budget. There are lots of cheap shortcuts, especially visible in a scene set in the countryside with characters standing beside a car (you'll know when you see it), and a hopeless scene depicting Merrill digging a hole, which tries (but fails) to hide the fact that his spade isn't actually making contact with anything, soil or otherwise.
Very modest and very British, there's probably a reason why this has not remained in many people's minds, and sadly that is because it's just not very convincing.
